Dear Kimberly Amadeo,

My name is Allie Brodbeck and I am a student at Nagel Middle School in Cincinnati, OH. I am researching how inflation is affecting today’s society. I am writing you because you are an expert on this topic. I have a few questions I would like to ask you:
  • What country has the highest inflation percentage 20 years ago?
  • If you were to buy an item today what would the price be today from 2 years ago?
  • What was the first year that inflation began getting tracked?

Thank you for your time and I hope to hear back from you soon.

Sincerely,
Allie Brodbeck

Kimberly Amadeo:

Hi Allie,

In answer to your questions, the highest inflation in the last 20 years was in Zimbabwe in 2004-2009. For more, see

http://useconomy.about.com/od/inflationfaq/f/Hyperinflation.htm

I'm not sure what question you are asking in # 2, but if you want a good inflation calculator to compare today's price to that from 2 years ago, see

http://useconomy.about.com/od/economicindicators/p/CPI.htm

This article teaches you how to use the calculator, and provides a link to the calculator. It will also give you the source for the answer to your third question. Inflation was tracked starting in 1913.
